Dotplot: A New Tool for Breast Self-Exams (In Development)

Dotplot is a handheld device with a companion app designed to aid women in performing breast self-exams. It aims to change the game of self-exams by:

  • Simplifying the process: A guided app and potentially user-friendly device can make self-exams less stressful and more manageable.
  • Promoting consistency: Reminders and ease of use can encourage regular self-exams, crucial for early detection.
  • Offering personalized feedback: By creating a baseline and tracking changes, Dotplot might highlight areas requiring a doctor’s evaluation.

Dotplot, designed by Debra Babalola and Shefali Bohra, came into the limelight after winning the UK James Dyson Award 2022. The award focuses on celebrating, encouraging, and empowering the next generation of design engineers.

The designers won a ÂŁ5,000 cash prize, which they are investing in developing Dotplot into a product worth using.

Right now, there is barely any information about Dotplot because it is still in the development phase. Dotplot is not yet on the market, no fundraising has been done, and no clinical studies have been carried out to know if it is a viable tool for checking breast cancer.

Nevertheless, there is hope that if it is released, it could change how breast self-exams are conducted.
